Chocó
Istmina, Chocó, is a town that is rapidly growing that is located on the shore of the San Juan river. Chocó is the poorest region of Colombia and the majority of its population is Afro-Colombian. The region of San Juan has been profoundly affectd by the situation of illicit crops and the presence of armed groups in the last several years. In Istmina, a peace office or social ministry has been organized by the regional counsil that works with the thirteen Mennonite Brethren Churches in the region to respond to the needs tht ariese in the region from a base of peace-building and development. In addition the church has also responded to the needs of displaced families in the last several years. Chocó is part of the tropical jungle region on the border between Colombia and Panama.
